Most law firm practice-area lists are written to be as long as possible. This one is written to be accurate. A&M Law is a two-partner firm in downtown Missoula, and the four practices below are the work we actually do, in the courts we actually appear in.

The reason to say that plainly is that the areas overlap in real life. A protective order arrives in the middle of a divorce. A DUI happens the same month a parenting plan is being negotiated. A crash leaves someone unable to work while support is still being calculated. Those cases are not four separate problems, and we would rather handle them as one.

Cooperative Family Law

A structured out-of-court process for couples who want to end a marriage without a contested court fight. It is the firm's signature practice, and it is available anywhere in Western Montana.

Criminal Defense

Charges in Montana district, justice, and city courts, from a first-offense misdemeanor through felony matters. Both partners are admitted at every level of the Montana court system.

Family Law

Divorce, parenting plans, support, and the orders that follow them, under Montana's Title 40. When a matter can be resolved without litigation we will say so; when it cannot, we try it.

Personal Injury

Claims against insurers after a crash, a fall, or a death caused by someone else's negligence. Montana's deadline for most injury lawsuits is generally three years (MCA § 27-2-204).

What We Do Not Handle

A short list, because it saves people a phone call. A&M Law does not draft wills or trusts, does not handle probate or estate administration, and does not take business formation, elder law, or water rights matters.

Estate planning is the one worth flagging, because it comes up most often in family law. If you are divorcing, the will, beneficiary designations, and power of attorney you signed while married almost certainly no longer say what you want them to say. That is a real thing to fix, and it is worth fixing early, but it is not our work. Ask us and we will tell you who in Missoula does it.

If your matter is somewhere we do not practice, we would rather say so at the start than take a retainer and learn it later.

What kinds of cases does A&M Law take?

Criminal defense, DUI and DWI, family law, Cooperative Family Law, and personal injury, across Western Montana. Every matter we handle has a page linked from this one. If your matter is not on this page, we do not take it, and we would rather tell you that on the first call than a month in.

What does A&M Law not handle?

We do not draft wills or trusts, we do not handle probate, and we do not do estate planning, business formation, elder law, or water rights. Those are real needs and several of them are urgent, particularly if you are going through a divorce, so we will point you toward someone who does that work rather than take it ourselves.

Which attorney would handle my case?

It depends on the matter. Misty Gaubatz and Ashley Hurlbert are both partners with 24+ years of combined experience between them, and you can read what each of them focuses on at our attorneys page. You will know who is handling your file before you retain us.

My situation involves more than one of these areas. Is that a problem?

No, and it is common. A domestic violence charge and a parenting plan frequently move at the same time, in different courts, and what you say in one can matter a great deal in the other. Handling both sides in one firm is part of why people call us.

Do you practice outside Missoula?

Yes. Our only office is in downtown Missoula, but we appear across Western Montana. Our areas we serve page lists the counties and judicial districts we work in most often.
